DV lottery 2008 winner - CP experience in Nepal

Name
usstudent
Country
United States

I have successfully managed to get my green card and I want to thank all those who have helped me in many ways in this time consuming, frustrating process!!!! cheers!

I was on an F1 status in the US when I won the DV lottery. my case number was AS00011XXX. initially I thought AOS would be better (less cost etc). but as i did my research on this portal, i found out that with a case number like this (which is considered pretty high) i should probably switch to CP. so I contacted KCC and told them to change my application to CP. they took about a month longer to do that. so even though my number was already current and most people around my number was scheduled for an interview on june, i was scheduled for july. the KCC will send you a letter about the date and time for interview at the embassy in your country.

when the time for my interview came, i went to the embassy with my documents.
i carried with me pretty much what was on the first letter:
1. birth certificate
2. police report (both Nepal and US)
3. academic certificates (including an official transcript).
4. all the letters from KCC.
5. bank statement (i took my dad's)
6. $775 or 750 application fee (i forget the exact amount)
7. i also attached my resume (not really required)
8. and photocopies of all the documents.
9. doctor's report.
just to get inside the embassy took a really long time. the line was long outside and it was in mid summer. not very pleasant.
after being called inside, i had to wait for my turn to go to the cashier. i paid them the amount (which is non refundable, meaning if u dont get the visa u dont get the money back).
after that more waiting...
then finally a Nepali girl called my named from one of the windows. i went to her and she asked for my documents. which i gave. she checked to see if i had evreything required. and then gave me my receipt with the date and time for my interview (which was scheduled the very next day).
the following day i go back. more waiting on the line just to get inside. and more waiting inside. people were being called in order in which they came to the embassy.
almost everyone ahead of me who were there for the DV interview got their visas. most of them were with family. i was the only one alone (as in single applicant). they each took about 15 minutes.
finally my name was called. there was a young lady at the window. she asked me almost no questions at all.. except "how are you?" and "what are you going to do after you go back to the US" (i had already graduated by then). then she asked me to sign a form. and told me to collect my visa after two days. it didnt even last 5 minutes to my surprise.
so i collected my visa two days later. after more waiting in the line. we also got briefed about the visa and how long its valid and got a sealed envelope (only to be opened my the immigration officer at the POE).
i stayed in nepal for two more months. and then flew to the US and my POE was new york city.
i thought it would take time. but didnt. the lady just opened my packet. did my finger prints and asked me to go a different way. i went there (the only person on the flight to go that way). a lady officer told me to wait.. she came back after two minutes with a couple of papers. told me to sign. and took my finger prints again.
and said "welcome to united states".
i got my welcome notice from USCIS after 2 weeks since i entered. and my greencard after a month since i got here.
so there u go.
I wish all future applicants all the best and i hope this info helps you in someway or the other.
