Background: Wife's H1 expires in a couple of weeks. Needed EAD card. Had filed I-765 on sept 07 2005. Five months and no EAD card yet. Checked with INS 800 number. Found the card was at Missouri ( Lee's Summit ) service center. Since time was running out on the H1 B. Took an appointment at Detroit Office. For interim EAD. Here is a sequence of events for some one else who might need an interim EAD in Detroit MI.
Feb 14, 2006. Logged onto uscis.gov to get an appointment. Punched in her name, date of birth, A #, I765 receipt number. took appointment for Feb 15, 7:45 am.
The printout instructed to show up at the service center 15 minutes before time.
Feb 15, 2006: 7:40 am. Took wife to INS center. Security check instructed to leave 'camera cell phone' in the car.
7:45 went in and handed over the printout.
7:50 called on the window.
The officer ( all women officers in this place) asked to see the I-765 reciept notice and I 485 recipt notice. Then she punched in and found the EAD card is stuck in missouri service center. She said to go and have breakfast and come back with photo copies of reciept notices. Since Missouri center was in the central time zone and not open yet. She said she will call and find when the card will be sent. And then give a temp. EAD only for that period.
8:00 am. went out and took photo copies from neighbouring shop. Went and passed the minutes in star bucks across jefferson ave.
8:45 returned back to INS. Showed ourselves to the officer in the window she told us to wait.
9:15 she called the wife inside and took her finger print and photo. Made her fill up the I765 again. Handed her the interim card valid for three weeks. The actual card might take seven to ten days to arrive.
9:30 -- 10:30 wife complained all the way back home that her photo did not come ok.
