E-Verify added an enhancement that will help identify and deter fraudulent use of Social Security numbers (SSNs) for employment eligibility verification. E-Verify is now able to detect patterns that indicate an SSN may have been used fraudulently. The enhancement strengthens the integrity of the E-Verify program by implementing standards that have proven effective in protecting individual identities.
There will be no change to the E-Verify process for employers as a result of this enhancement. Employers and employees will follow normal steps in the current process to resolve a Social Security Administration (SSA) Tentative Nonconfirmation (TNC). Employers will not know that the SSA TNC is the result of a locked SSN and they must not discriminate against or assume that an employee with an SSA TNC is committing fraud.
If an employee attempts to use a locked SSN, E-Verify will generate a TNC. The employee receiving the TNC will have the opportunity to contest the finding at their local SSA field office. If SSA confirms the employee’s identity correctly matches the SSN, the TNC will be converted to “Employment Authorized” or another appropriate status in E-Verify.
